Story
Sam ( Peter Dinklage ) and his brother, rock musician Dash ( Matt Ellis ) returning from the bar at night in a car have an accident , faced with another car. Dash receives serious injuries and dies, before he dies, he has time to say something to his brother, but he does not understand the words.
A year after these events, the scientist Gordon Dunn ( Martin Donovan ) presents at the conference a unique device called “Mnemo” ( eng. Mnemo ), which allows you to record and reproduce human memories . On a wide screen, Dunn shows the memories of members of the so-called test group - experimental scientists. On the same day Gordon mysteriously dies. Sam Bloom, who was at the conference, is trying to figure out the reasons for his death. The suspects are the members of the test group and the head of Cortex Lawton ( Henry Ian Cusick ), who funded Dunn's research.
Sam meets Gordon's wife, Carolyn ( Julia Ormond ), posing as James, a long-time friend of Gordon. Bloom takes possession of Dunn's device and finds out that he had a technical error that causes side effects that lead to recurring hallucinations of users, and that members of the test group were dissatisfied with the result and Gordon himself. He also learns that Gordon and Carolyn lived apart after they lost their only daughter in an accident. Carolyn looks at the record of her husband’s memories and finds out that he committed suicide after realizing that his invention caused only pain and suffering in the lives of users. He dies trying to erase his memories while still connected to the device.
Meanwhile, Bloom is reviewing the memory of the accident in which his brother died. He learns that Dash did not tell him anything before his death, but merely sang his song. Sam also sees that the car in which they crashed, was the family of Gordon, and their daughter died. Bloom apologizes to Carolyn and gives her memories of the recording, but she does not watch them and instead throws them into the sea. At the end of the film, Carolyn watches her daughter play near the water - it is a hallucination caused by using the device.
