Biography

Early years

Born in 1888. He studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory , which he graduated in 1916 from the piano class of N. A. Sokolov. He was in close relationship with A. I. Ziloti , whose daughter, Kiriena Alexandrovna, married. Perhaps he was also his direct student, but reliable information on this subject has not been preserved.

In 1916 he left Petrograd and took the post of director and teacher of piano at the newly opened Yekaterinburg School of Music (now the Sverdlovsk Music College named after P.I. Tchaikovsky ). The appointment took place on the recommendation of L.V. Nikolaev , the head of the commission of the Imperial Musical Society - which indicates that the recent graduate had a brilliant reputation in the musical circles of the Russian Empire.

As a director, Lazarev introduced harmony and choir classes at the school, sought to expand the teaching staff, and was engaged in concert programs. His first performances as a pianist date back to the same time, and they earned very warm praise from critics.

Revolution and Emigration

In 1919 he was forced to leave the city due to its capture by the Red Army . Then he moved to Irkutsk , where he got a job as a teacher in the piano class of Irkutsk People’s University. In 1920, the Red Army also entered Irkutsk, after which the musician left for Chita , which became the capital of the Far Eastern Republic : here he became a teacher at the People’s Conservatory.

He emigrated from Soviet Russia and settled in Harbin , most likely by 1922. He became a teacher at the First Harbin School of Music. Many of his wandering comrades got here too. The second place of work is the Lotus studio: Lazarev taught the piano class, and his wife Kiriena Alexandrovna taught the theory of music and solfeggio .

In the second half of the 1920s, he stayed in the United States . According to some reports, he was an assistant to Ziloti at the Juilliard School. However, apparently, he soon returned to China , where he was going to open his own school in Shanghai and name it after Rachmaninoff , with whom he was in good relations. Departure could be connected with a break with his wife - she stayed to live in New York

The idea of opening a new school did not materialize, although Lazarev was still in demand as a teacher: he was able to get a job at the First Glazunov Music School, founded by Russian emigrants. He was also enrolled in the piano department of the Shanghai National Conservatory. In both institutions he had many students, mainly from the Chinese.

In 1937, Shanghai was occupied by Japanese troops. Lazarev left the city and went to Chongqing , where he got a job in the branch of the National Conservatory organized there. In 1945, the pianist returned to Shanghai and continued to work at the conservatory. Soon became the largest leader in piano education in China. Since 1946, he was simultaneously teaching at the higher musical educational institutions of Nanjing and Beijing .

Later years

In 1948, on the eve of the coming to power of the Communists, Lazarev returned to the United States. There is little information available about his activities in America. It is known that in 1950 she became a piano teacher at the Conservatory in Troy , New York .

There is no reliable data on the date of Lazarev's death. It is believed that this happened in 1982.
