A-158 " Cool - Baksan - Elbrus " is a federal highway located on the territory of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic [1] . Until December 31, 2017, it was allowed to use the previous designation of the R-289 highway, in the Prokhladny-Baksan section. The length of the route is 150 km.

Description
The federal highway starts at the western edge of the city of Prokhladny and runs from the north-east to the south-west of Kabardino-Balkaria, covering the territory of the Prokhladnensky , Baksan and Elbrus regions. At the southwestern outskirts of the city of Baksan intersects with the highway "Caucasus" P-217 .
On the territory of the Prokhladnensky district, it runs along the flat terrain, passing in the Baksansky district into the foothill and further into the mountains in the Elbrus region.
With the exception of some sections, the entire route is two-lane. For most of its route, the road runs along the Baksan River.
Status
To the city of Tyrnyauz , the road is in satisfactory condition and traffic rarely overlaps. Above the city, traffic is often blocked due to various dangerous natural processes, in particular, mudflows in the summer and avalanches in the winter, when the road is either blocked by the flow of mass or completely washed away by it.
So at the beginning of September 2017, the stretch of road between the villages of Neutrino and Elbrus was washed away due to the breakthrough of Lake Bashkara , which provoked a gathering of villages [2] .
At the beginning of July 2018, a section of the road in the vicinity of the village of Elbrus was again washed away due to mudflow precipitation provoked by heavy rainfall [3] .
