The start of the call was given on August 11 at 10:55 local time. 28 walkers from 15 countries went to the distance [3] . Women started at the same time as men, although initially they had to compete earlier. The reason for the transfer was the suspicion of a gas leak near the highway [4] .

Competitions were held in comfortable weather: +21 degrees and light rain. Participants overcame the first half of the distance at a slow pace, for 41.08. The only detachment attempt that Callum Wilkinson made at 7 km was immediately stopped by the judges - they showed the British a third warning for the walking technique, which meant disqualification. The main fight for medals began closer to the finish line, when after 17 km the three leaders decided: two Spaniards Alvaro Martin and Diego Garcia , as well as Russian Vasily Mizinov , who acted as a neutral athlete. 2 laps before the finish, Martin started the acceleration, which his rivals could not support. Garcia won the silver medal, Mizinov saved the bronze, which, due to two warnings, did not fight for first place [5] . Martin’s gold medal was Spain’s fifth in the 20 km race in the history of the European Championships - the best indicator among all countries.
