Tolyatti is a city with a relatively young sports history, but with already established sports traditions, professional teams and world-class athletes.
History
Local historians do not find any mention of citizens playing sports until the early 50s of the 20th century. Then two sports societies “Trud” and “Energy” appeared in the city at once, the latter being the leading sports community of the city until the end of the 1950s.
The center of sports life in Tolyatti was the local stadium around which stands were built during the construction of the hydroelectric station. The stadium hosted not only sports competitions, but also concerts and performances by artists. When moving the city, the stands were dismantled, moved to a new place and put in place of the future Trud stadium.
In connection with the construction of the Zhigulevskaya hydroelectric station and the growth of the city’s population, the number of sports teams and clubs in the city is growing. In 1956, there were 26 football teams alone. Since 1952, ice rinks began to be flooded in all city stadiums in winter, which allowed the population to engage in ice skating and hockey on a massive scale (previously, ice had to be used on lakes closest to the city).
Sport in the modern life of the city
After the transfer to a new place, the city’s development initially included a number of sports facilities for various purposes, and although not all of them are operational today, we can say that the city has a highly developed sports infrastructure, and its athletes are known not only in Russia but also internationally scale.
Amateur sport in the city is also not in last place: more than four hundred sporting events are held annually, in which a total of more than 100,000 people of all ages participate. More than 55,000 people are constantly involved in sports, which is slightly more than 7% of the total population of the city, among children and young people the proportion is slightly different: almost 40% of them are engaged in sports.
60 kinds of sports are cultivated in Tolyatti, the most popular among them are football, basketball (both more than 6000 people), volleyball (about 4500), swimming (3400), handball (3300). There are 26 institutions of continuing education of a sports orientation in 34 sports. Sports clubs of the city are exempted from rent for municipal premises.
Sports cultivated in Tolyatti
The following are the main sports in Tolyatti, for each of which the names of the most prominent representatives are given and important sports facilities are described. The sequence of presentation of sports does not depend on their significance and scale. First, the Olympic sports are described alphabetically, then non-Olympic.
Basketball
Basketball is a relatively young sport for the city. The first professional teams appeared in the city only in the early 2000s.
Russian Championship
The Togliatti team was created in 2001 , played in the major league “A” of the Russian championship . Her coach was Vladimir Trunov , who, after a conflict with the club’s management, was dismissed. In 2004, Trunov created another professional team, “ Standard ”, which became the winner of the first league of the national championship. After the successful game demonstrated by the Standard, the city authorities decided to reduce one of the teams for financial reasons and BC Togliatti was disbanded. Thanks to the sponsorship contribution, “Standard” passed the major league and in 2004 was declared immediately for participation in the Super League “B” .
In 2006, the club moved to Super League “A” , but there was no venue for the games in the city that met the requirements of the top division of the national championship. It was decided to change the name of the club to “Standard-Samara Region” and use the site in the city of Samara as a home arena. Thus, the team left Togliatti [1] .
In 2007/2008, another Togliatti club “SDUSSHOR” played in the Russian basketball championship among men's teams of the major league “B”. The team is declared to participate in the championship as an amateur, its players are students of urban universities [2] . The home arena of the team is the sports complex "Acrobat" - one of the largest sports facilities in the Central district of the city. In their debut season 2007/2008, the team took the penultimate 9th place [3] .

For lovers, since 2006, a streetball (street basketball) festival has been held, which is quite popular among citizens, so in 2007 627 teams took part in the festival, each of which included 4 people [4] .
City championships are also held among men's and student teams.

The first regatta in the city was held in 1958.

Togliatti - once was the center of major automobile sports: rally , circuit racing, autocross. The city hosted the stages of the Russian championship in highway-ring racing. The Silver Rook race is held annually on the third Sunday of September, on the Day of the Machine Builder , on the track of the building of the auxiliary workshops (CEC) of AVTOVAZ OJSC.
It was planned to build the latest racing track LADA RING on the basis of the test site of AvtoVAZ OJSC in s. Pine that meets all international standards.
However, after a change of leadership at AvtoVAZ and a sharp reduction in funding, not only club sports suffered, but even a profile for the plant, but very expensive motorsport. The AvtoVAZ company team does not actually take part in the competitions of the country's strongest racers. Existing Tolyatti-ring tracks and the KVC circuit require repair and no longer meet the standards accepted in motorsport. The race racers still almost never come to the races in the city.
Even the stages of the national racing series LADA are not held in Togliatti. In fact, motor racing in the city is in deep crisis [20] .
Golf
In 2004, the All-Russian ice golf tournament was held in Tolyatti. Then the construction of golf courses began. However, after the death of the main urban golf enthusiast, things stalled: the construction of the fields stopped, the school of young golfits fell apart.
Tolyatti athletes take part and win in Russian and some international competitions, but they have no place for training in the city itself. There are only two small golf courses [21] .
Sports Acrobatics
Tolyatti is an all-Russian center for sports acrobatics. It is in this sport that most Togliatti became world champions.
The achievements of the pupils of Vitaly Groysman , an honored trainer of the USSR and Russia, an honorary citizen of the city, who trained 30 world and European champions in acrobatics and trampoline , who won 175 gold medals, look impressive.
The level of sports acrobatics tournaments held in Tolyatti is also very significant. In 2008, the Russian Cup was held in trampoline , acrobatic track and double mini-tramp . Also in September 2008, Togliatti hosted the finals of the World Cup in trampoline and acrobatic track with the participation of the winners of the 2008 Summer Olympics.

The base arena for the performance of all the city’s speedway teams is the track of the Stroitel stadium - the only track in the country that meets international standards. In 2009, the final of the European Championship was held in Tolyatti.
Glow Speedway
In 1975, "Lada" for the first time won medals in the major league championship - takes third place. In 1986, silver.
In 1989-1990, the club experienced serious financial difficulties, the question arose of the complete cessation of the existence of the team. The composition did not have adult riders, there were neither new motorcycles , nor spare parts for old ones.
In 1993, the situation changed dramatically, the team has a sponsor: Togliatti company Mega-Lada. New equipment is being bought, leading racers of the country are invited. The format of the race has changed: each home race of the club turned into a citywide celebration with concerts, lotteries, fireworks.
In 1994, the team won the Russian championship for the first time. Since then, the Garevka Speedway team, which has changed its name to Mega-Lada, has become the most titled club in the city: it has twelve champion titles and four European Champions Cups won. The team became the undisputed leader of the domestic speedway: for the period 2000-2008. she lost at home only 1 race with a difference of only 1 point. Club racers repeatedly become country champions in pair races and in individual championships. The Russian national team, which included Mega-Lada racers, took second place in the World Cup. The Togliatti driver Emil Sayfutdinov became the 2007 World Junior Speedway Champion and for the first time in the history of Russian sports was included in the permanent membership of the World Grand Prix series and the World Championship .
Until the 2009 season, the club actively used the best motorcycle racers in the world as legionaries: in its ranks were world champion Nicky Pedersen and vice champion Lee Adams .
After the assassination of club president A. Stepanov, Mega-Lada faced serious financial problems, and in the 2009 season it took last place without winning a single race.
Mega-Lada is not the only speedway team in the history of Togliatti. In 1996, Mega-Lada-2 appeared in the Russian Championship, taking fourth place.
Ice Speedway
Speedway on ice in the city appeared a little later than usual, but for a long time it was on ice that the Togliatti motorcycle racers achieved great success.
Anatoly Bondarenko in 1976 became the bronze medalist of the USSR championship , the very next year he won it. In 1977, Bondarenko became the silver medalist of the World Cup, European journalists nicknamed him the Volga Lightning. In 1979, Anatoly Bondarenko achieved unique success: in one season he won all possible gold medals. He became the world champion in the individual and team championships, the champion of the USSR in the individual and team events, and also the champion of the RSFSR. In subsequent years, he has repeatedly won prizes in the championships of the country and the world. His brother Nikolai also became the champion of the USSR [25] .
The team of the Kuibyshev region, made up of Togliatti riders, became the bronze medalist of the first USSR speedway championship on ice, in 1981 won silver medals, and in 1979 and 1982 became the champion.

In just a year of existence, the athletes of the team achieved considerable personal achievements. Mega-Lada racer Dmitry Khomitsevich became the second in the personal world championship and the first in the team . Vitaly Khomitsevich won the personal championship of Russia , and Ivan Ivanov won the Cup of Russia .

In 1986, a sports section was created in the city for children aged 14-16 to prepare athletes for performance in the 125 cm³ class.
In 1990, the city hosted the finals of the national championship, in which the racers of the teenage club Zhigulenok (under the leadership of coach S. Zasypalov) won the title of champion of the USSR. In subsequent years, this success has been repeated more than once.

The school is engaged in more than 100 children who study the construction of motorcycles and engines, and are profoundly engaged in English. They have at their disposal the only children's track in the country with stands for spectators, as well as specially purchased motorcycles with an engine capacity of 80 cm³, which even 7-8 year olds can train on.

Every year on the Zhiguli Circumnavigation route, “high-speed circumnavigations” are held: June - water, July - cycling, November - walking, February - skiing. Competitions are extreme. Unlike the spring water trip in Yalı, lasting 10 days, “high-speed round-the-world trips” are held non-stop and are held over two days off.
Chess
The most intellectual sport was not left unattended in Togliatti. In 1974, the city chess club named after Anatoly Karpov started working, however, in the early 2000s, the club had problems with extending the lease for municipal premises [26] . However, in 2003, the SCSSA No. 4 "Chess" appeared in the city, on the basis of which the Chess School of the International Grandmaster Yuri Yakovich appeared , which specializes in training young athletes [27] . The conditions created at the school attract young athletes from all over Russia: Ivan Bukavshin and Darsen Sanzhaev came to the city to specialize in chess. Graduates of the school achieved significant success in the chess world: Dmitry Frolyanov at the age of 20 became an international grandmaster , Ivan Bukavshin became the 2008 European champion in his age group, and Darsen Sanzhaev became the bronze medalist of the European Rapid Chess Championship in 2008 [28] .
