Biography
Born in Germany in the family of a doctor Ivan Renard (Jean-Claude Renard), who died in 1827. Having received his initial education in Mainz, Renard entered (1827) at the medical faculty of the University of Giessen , which he graduated in 1832 with a doctorate in medicine. He spent a year at the University of Heidelberg and a year in Paris, where he listened to the lectures of the first medical celebrities of that time and studied practically in Paris hospitals.
He moved to Moscow in 1834 at the invitation of his uncle, president of the Moscow Medical and Surgical Academy, Fischer von Waldheim . He entered as a family doctor to the Moscow Governor-General, Prince D.V. Golitsyn , and as a doctor he accompanied the family of Prince M.F. Golitsyn to the Caucasus. In these houses I got acquainted with many dignitaries. These acquaintances later helped Renard in achieving one of the main goals of his entire scientific life - the development of the Moscow Society of Naturalists .
Librarian of the library of the Moscow Medical and Surgical Academy (1837–1846) until the academy closed. Through the efforts of Renard, the library, before which was in a state of great chaos, was brought into exemplary order. In 1843, the Academy awarded Renard a doctorate in medicine (1843).
In 1846, he was appointed keeper of the Zoological Museum of Moscow University by decision of Count S. G. Stroganov. In 1855 he was awarded the Order of St. Stanislav of the 2nd degree. After the death of K. F. Roulier (1858), Renard became director of the Zoological Museum (1858–1862). Having not received the post of professor at Moscow University, Renard could not inherit the department after Rule, and this complicated his activity as the director of the museum. In particular, he was not able to prevent the transfer of part of the collections of the Zoological Museum to the Public Museum (1860).
In 1840, Fischer von Waldheim recruited Renard to work in the Society of Naturalists , where he was assigned the duties of secretary of the society. He was also a librarian of the company and editor of the Bulletin of the company; since 1872, he was vice president, and in 1884-1886, he was president of the Moscow Society of Naturalists, which was often even called the Renarov Society. Over the years, he conducted all the extensive business correspondence of the society for the exchange of collection materials and literature, edited articles and sought funds for their publication in the Bulletin.
Renard set the goal of life to improve the affairs of society; brought her library in order. As secretary, he began scientific correspondence with scientists from different parts of the world, and as an editor, he achieved the distribution of scientific publications of the Company. Renard spent a lot of work and knowledge to enrich both the material resources of the Society and the library and museums of Moscow University . After working for eighteen years at the Zoological Museum, Renard subsequently transferred his energy to the ethnographic department of the Rumyantsev Museum , which owes many of its remarkable exhibits to Renard and as head and conservative of ethnographic collections 1867-1886), which he described in the “Collection of Materials for the History of Moscow Public and Rumyantsev Museums. ”
In 1865, he was promoted to state councilors and in the same year, the Imperial Moscow Society of Nature Experts celebrated the 25th anniversary of Renard as the scientific secretary of the society, and in 1882 he celebrated the 50th anniversary of the activities of his vice president. These anniversaries clearly showed the deep respect that Renard deserved among scholars, statesmen and monarchs in different parts of the world. The collection of welcome speeches for the 50th anniversary, addresses, telegrams from Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Australia amounted to a whole volume of impressive size. Renard was a member of 26 scientific societies and institutions, an honorary member of 43 societies, an advisory member of 43 societies, an advisory member of the Medical Council of the Ministry of the Interior , and a corresponding member of 22 academic societies and institutions. The University of Hesse sent Renard a renewed honorary doctorate in medicine, surgery, and obstetrics for his 50th birthday. On the same day, Renard was blessed with an expression of the highest favor of the Emperor.
He was awarded Russian orders up to the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree inclusive (St. Anne of the 1st art. In 1879, St. Stanislav of the 1st art. In 1873, St. Vladimir of the 3rd art. In 1870); foreign: the holder of the Grand Cross of the Order of Philip the Magnanimous , the Prussian Crown of the 3rd century, the Württemberg Order of Frederick the 2nd century [1] , as well as the Commander Order of the Legion of Honor .
He died on September 1, 1886 in Wiesbaden after a long illness.
