It was founded by small service people no later than the middle of the XVII century . According to the documents known since 1670 . The name is along the Studenets creek, flowing from the cold ( cold ) key. Upper - as it is located in the upper reaches of the stream. At the mouth was the village of Lower Studenets (now the village of Donskoye ).
Upper Studenets was “... inhabited in the middle of the seventeenth century by noblemen, children of the boyars and other servicemen; in 1670 there was already a wooden church in the name of Nikolai. ” The stone church in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in 1812 was built on his estate by Prince Andrei Alexandrovich Volkonsky (c. 1750–1813), belonging to the Voronezh branch of the Volkonsky princes.
Hero of the Soviet Union Mikhail Trubitsyn was born in the village.
