International scientific name
Penicillium glabrum( Wehmer ) Westling , 1911
A common species, forming fast-growing dark green colonies with single-tier brushes.
Description
Colonies on agar Chapek fast-growing, in 7 days reach a diameter of 4-5 cm, velvety. Sporulation is dark green. Reverse yellow to yellow-orange; sometimes colorless to brownish exudate and yellow soluble pigment are secreted.
Conidiophores are single-tier, smooth-walled to barely rough, 50-100 microns long and 3-3.5 microns thick, swollen at the apex. Phialides in bundles of 10-16, flask-like, 8-12 × 3-3.5 microns. Conidia are spherical to almost spherical and widely elliptic, smooth to barely rough, 3–3.5 μm in diameter.
Differences from close species
Penicillium frequentans , with which it previously combined, is very close. The latter is distinguished by a yellow-brown reverse on CYA at 27-30 ° C, while in P. glabrum the color of the reverse on this medium is beige-brown, with less warm tones. P. glabrum usually grows somewhat faster on CYA at 30 ° C. P. glabrum synthesizes citromycetin, fulvic acid, asteric acid, bisdechlorheodyne, geodyne, sulokhrin.
Ecology and Importance
A widespread species distributed in acidic soils, on cereal plants and grain, on food products.
