Biography
Born in the city of Medvezhyegorsk, Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. He graduated from Voronezh State University (1963) and (after serving in the army) - his graduate school. From 1968 to 1988 he worked in the same place: assistant, senior lecturer, associate professor, head of the department of agrochemistry and soil science, vice-rector for scientific work.
In 1988-1997 he was a director, and since 1997 he was the chief scientific associate of the laboratory of geographic information systems and agroecological monitoring of the All-Union (All-Russian) Research Institute of Agriculture and Soil Protection from Erosion.
Doctor of Biological Sciences (1987), Professor (1980), Academician of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1991, corresponding member since 1988), Academician of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1991).
His research interests are theoretical and applied aspects of soil fertility, agrochemistry and biochemistry, soil changes under the influence of anthropogenic factors, soil ecology and conservation, adaptive landscape farming.
Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation . He was awarded the medals "20 years of victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.", "Veteran of Labor", the silver medal of the Swedish Royal Academy of Agricultural Sciences, medal of Julius Kühn University. Martin Luther (Germany).
The author (co-author) of more than 200 scientific papers, including 25 monographs, textbooks and textbooks.
