The origin of the toponym

The basis of the toponym is unknown, in the written sources the letters C and W alternate ( est. S, Š ). For the old Pskov dialects, such an alternation is characteristic, it is also considered characteristic of the Krivichi . According to the researcher of the Pechora dialects S. Gluskina , the toponym is a substrate that has been preserved through the mediation of the Baltic tribes. The described alternation of sounds in Setu place names is very common. Estonian ethnographer and linguist considered the old Russian word “sheshok” ( ferret ) borrowed by the Balts (according to Trusmann, in Latvian it is “sess” ( Latvian. Sesks ), in Lithuanian - “sheshk” ( lit.) šeškas ). [2]
