Creation History
On September 7, 2018, through an Instagram account , Del Rey announced the release of two new songs, “Ideal for ending the summer,” revealing the name of one of the two - “Mariners Apartment Complex”. In addition, the performer confirmed that both tracks were produced by Jack Antonoff [2] , the winner of three Grammy awards, and sound engineer Laura Sisk [3] worked on the mix. According to a press release published by The Fader , Del Rey’s sixth album will be released in 2019 [4] . The premiere of “Mariners Apartment Complex” was held on September 12 at the British radio station BBC Radio One in the program “Annie Mac” [5] , after which the singer gave a telephone interview, in which she announced the next single, “ Venice Bitch ”, which will be released September 18 [4] . Del Rey also spoke in detail about the meaning of the song:
| This song is about the moment when I walked in the evening with the guy I met, and suddenly we stopped at his friend’s apartment, he put his hand on my shoulder and said: “You know, it seems to me that we are together, because we are so similar “We are both crazy,” and I thought that was the saddest thing I had heard. I replied: "I'm not sad, and I did not know that you think that we are like this." I said: "Actually, I feel good." He was upset, and I wrote this song, because there were so many cases when I had to be at the helm, I lit the way for everyone [6] . Original text Well, this song is kind of about this time that I took a walk late at night with the guy I was seeing. We stopped in front of his friend's apartment complex, and he put his hand on my shoulder and he said: "You know, I think we're together because we're both similar, like, we're both really messed up." And I thought that was the saddest thing I ever heard. I said "I'm not sad, I didn't know that that's what you thought you were relating to me on that level", and I said to him, "You know, I'm actually doing pretty good." He was upset and that was when I wrote this song, 'cause I thought I've had to do this so many times where I had to step into that role where I was showing the way and I was sort of being, like, the brighter light. |
Del Rey continued to say how she was pleasantly surprised by the opportunity to present the song on the radio - the performer was counting on a modest promotional campaign, saying: “<...> I thought that I would just release it [the song], and I would be fine from the mere thought that she left for me myself. But it’s wonderful to share the song with people, I didn’t expect it ” [6] .
Music Style and Criticism
“Mariners Apartment Complex” is a gloomy psychedelic [7] rock ballad in the spirit of the 1970s , in the recording of which they used “melancholy” [8] keyboards , acoustic guitars and dive strings . According to Mark Hogan of Pitchfork , “the text she [Del Rey] whispers is as beautiful as she sings, as usual very flattering and mysterious, having references to Greek mythology . For all that, she insists that she is not what we thought before - she is stronger. "I am not a candle in the wind," Del Rey states, and then: "You are lost in the ocean, and I am again directing your boat in my direction." The essence is clear: this world belongs to Lana, and we are just its inhabitants ” [9] . The track brings up “favorite” themes in Del Rey's work: sadness and romance. “I am the side of the ship, I am the thunderbolts, I am the storm / The girl who will make you think / Who you are and who you were,” Del Rey sings to the accompaniment of synthesizer strings and acoustic guitar [7] . According to a critic of Paper magazine, the song narrates about “the power of forgiveness and the second chance in a relationship” [10] . Billboard magazine spoke of the singer’s vocals at Mariners Apartment Complex as “luxurious, amid a beautiful country- style guitar” [5] . Lake Schatz of Consequence of Sound , in contrast, called Del Rey's voice in the song “lifeless.” [11]
In his review, Mark Hogan from Pitchfork focuses on the fact that Del Rey “finally found her sedative”: “She [the performer] is approaching the essence of her creative nature. The trip and hip hop album, stunning Born to Die (2012), gives way to the psychedelic rock disc, slow Ultraviolence (2014), followed by the luxurious and dreamy Honeymoon (2015). Last year's magnificent album Lust for Life gives us a sad girl, characteristic of Lana’s work, and is she happy now? But the Mariners Apartment Complex is one step ahead. She represents Del Rey as a very versatile character, a harbor in a raging sea <...> In this composition, Lana enjoys her accumulated strength ” [9] . Anna Gaka, a columnist for Spin , called the song “self-confident” and compared its sound with the tracks on the Lust for Life album, including “13 Beaches” and “White Mustang” [12] .
Music video
The music video, which was attended by Del Rey dancers (Ashley Rodriguez and Alexandria Kaye) [10] , was directed by Del Rey's sister, Caroline "Chuck" Grant [5] . The clip is shot in black and white and contains shots from the air shots of waves beating on rocks; during the clip, Del Rey walks along the fenced area and watches the butterfly in her palm [7] . The music video was released through the YouTube platform simultaneously with the release of the song in digital format [13] .
