History

The tuning fork award was established by the Secretariat of the Union of Russian Journalists on August 30, 2013, on the 55th birthday of Novaya Gazeta journalist Anna Politkovskaya , who was killed in 2006 at the entrance of her own house in Moscow [1] [2] [3] [4 ] ] . At the same time, in the official provision on the award on the website of the SJR, Politkovskaya’s birthday is indicated on September 7 [5] . Prior to this, in 2007, the international non-governmental organization RAW in War established the Anna Politkovskaya Prize , which is awarded to women for conducting human rights activities in military places [2] . The tuning fork prize has nothing to do with either the first Politkovskaya Prize or the Novaya Gazeta, in which the journalist worked [6] [7] . Initially, the participation of Novaya Gazeta’s employees and Politkovskaya’s relatives in the nomination and discussion of the nominations was prescribed in the award, but then the set standards began to decline and the award began to be presented posthumously to non-journalists by profession, which resulted in a series of scandals [6] .

Grounds and Rights

According to the provisions of the Prize of 2018, it is awarded to journalists "for outstanding achievements in the field of human rights protection, for courage and consistency in upholding the principles of freedom of speech, for honesty, dignity, civic responsibility and human compassion." The prize is not awarded posthumously; projects; persons and journalists - members of the Secretariat of the WJR. Candidates for the award may be nominated by regional branches of the WJR, media groups, management of editorial and publishing houses, as well as individual journalists - members of the WJW. An application for nomination is submitted to the JJR for submission to the jury. The composition of the jury is formed by the secretariat of the WJR from “authoritative, respected journalists and specialists in the field of media”. The jury draws up a list of nominees and nominates no more than three winners, which are approved by the secretariat of the WJ. The award is made by a decision of the jury, which is approved by the chairman of the WJ [5] . The prize is presented at a ceremony with a charity concert at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory on September 8 of each year on the International Journalism Solidarity Day , commemorating the journalist Julius Fucik who was executed in Nazi Germany in 1943 [8] [9] [10 ] ] . The award sign is a natural tuning fork , on the case of which the name of the winner for the given year is engraved [5] .
