Description
According to the US Department of Defense, the YJ-18 missile is similar in characteristics to the Russian 3M-54 Club with a subsonic cruising and supersonic terminal mode; [2] firing range is 540 km [3] . Some Western analysts believe that the YJ-18 is a copy of the 3M-54E with a firing range of 180 km at a speed of M = 0.8 and 40 km at a speed of M = 2.5 ... 3.0; other sources claim that in the underwater variant the missile has a range of 500 km, the speed at the terminal portion of the trajectory is M = 2 and the flight altitude is lower than that of the Russian Caliber / Club missile. [four]
A missile can be launched from a vertical launch system , [5] and, possibly, from torpedo tubes of a submarine. Chinese media claim that the missile has an inertial guidance system using the BeiDou navigation satellite system and carries a 300 kg high-explosive fragmentation warhead or anti-radar warhead to destroy electronic weapons at short range. [6]
YJ-18 is deployed on type 052D destroyers and, in the future, on type 055 destroyers . The missile can be carried by SHANG-II type nuclear submarines equipped with a vertical launch system. It is expected that the missile will replace the obsolete YJ-82 with a range of 37 km on submarines of the YUAN type (project 041) with an air-independent power plant, diesel-electric submarines of the SONG type (project 039) and, probably, on submarines of the 095 type, as well as on submarines of project 877 . The ground version can replace the YJ-62 subsonic missile with a range of 400 km, designed for coastal missile batteries.
