One of Ilya’s brothers, Sergei, studied with Pyotr Tchaikovsky at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1894, he began temporarily “correcting the position” (acting as) of a university doctor, and two years later - at his own request - was dismissed as a laboratory assistant and approved by a doctor; remained to them until 1903. In the same year, in 1896, Aleksandrovich-Dochevsky defended his dissertation entitled “Materials for the pharmacology of liquid extract of hemp cache”, becoming a doctor of medicine: in his work, he showed that hemp cache slows the pulse, increases blood pressure and strengthens heart contractions. From 1899 to 1900, he was the supernumerary resident of the surgical faculty clinic.

In addition to academic work, the clinic also conducted research; Ilya Ivanovich himself took part in the work of the Society of Naturalists and Doctors, which he entered on January 18, 1893. During the First World War, in 1915, he left work at the university due to illness and, together with his family, left Tomsk: the following year, the Ministry of Education of the Russian Empire assigned him a pension of 4,500 rubles a year.
