History

The settlement from which the city later grew was founded December 31, 1888. The municipality of Puerto Colombia was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1905.

The city is located in the northern part of the department, within the Caribbean lowland , approximately 11 kilometers west of the city of Barranquilla , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 10 meters above sea ​​level [1] . The municipality of Puerto Colombia is bordered in the east and southeast by the territory of the municipality of Barranquilla, in the southwest by the municipality of Tubara , in the north and west by the waters of the Caribbean Sea . The area of ​​the municipality is 93 km² [2] .

According to the 2005 census, men made up 50.2% of the population of Puerto Colombia, women - respectively 49.8%. Racially whites and mestizos accounted for 96% of the city’s population; Indians - 3.5%; Blacks , mulattoes, and Riesale - 0.5% [4] . The literacy rate for the entire population was 94%.

Economy

53% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are service enterprises, 39.7% are trade enterprises, 6.4% are industrial enterprises, 0.9% are enterprises of other sectors of the economy [4] .
