Content
Colonies on agar Chapek limited growth, in 14 days they reach a diameter of 2-2.5 cm. The reverse is unpainted or yellow-brown, usually there is no exudate or it is colorless, not abundant. On CYA they grow faster, reaching 3-4 cm per week, sometimes radially furrowed, velvety to granular, sometimes with koremias along the edges. Sporulation is plentiful, gray-green. Colony reversal is usually brown-orange to taupe, sometimes soluble brown pigment and clear exudate are secreted. Colonies on agar with malt extract are fast-growing, flat, velvety, sometimes with koremias on the edges, sporulation is moderate to abundant. The reverse is chocolate brown. At 37 ° C there is no growth. The smell is somewhat perfumery.
Some strains form soft brown sclerotia up to 300 microns in diameter.
Conidiophores are three-tiered, smooth-walled, 100-300 microns long and 3-5 microns thick, with pressed elements. Metulae are cylindrical, 14-20 microns long, smooth-walled. The phialides in bundles at the ends of the metulae are 3-6, cylindrical, with a short but noticeable neck, 8-15 × 2.5-4.5 microns. The conidia are cylindrical, then elliptical to almost spherical, smooth-walled, 3.5-5 × 2.2-3.5 microns.
Differences from close species
It is determined by growth on citrus fruits, as well as by large gray-green colonies with dark brown reverse and the original cylindrical shape of conidia. The closest species is Penicillium ulaiense , which is characterized by slower growth and less bright color.
