Creation History

The history of the mark began with the Highest approved by Emperor Nicholas II “Instructions for the training of machine gun shooting” and set out in the registered decree of June 22 ( July 5 ) 1912 [2] .

Character Description

The description of the mark is set out in the “Manual for machine gun firing” [3] [k 1] :

The mark for excellent machine gun fire has three degrees:
A) The first (highest) degree consists of a monogram depicting the Name of the SQUARE OF THE EMPEROR, with the Imperial Crown at the top, and a machine gun on a tripod, placed in the middle of the sign, surrounded by a ribbon with a convex inscription for excellent shooting. A monogram image, a crown and a yellow metal ribbon, a machine gun and a tripod are blued (Fig. 1).
B) The second and third degrees consist of the same signs, but without a monogram image of the Name of the Sovereign Emperor. The second degree has a yellow metal tape. The third is white metal (devil 2).

Who was awarded

The badge was awarded to the lower ranks, awarded the title of an excellent machine gunner according to the results of training shooting [1] . Military men became excellent machine gunners, having completed five (for students trained in shooting the first year) or six (for students trained in shooting the 2nd and 3rd years) exercises of the training shooting course. Moreover, the seventh exercise was mandatory for all categories [4] . Signs of the third degree were awarded to lower ranks awarded for the first time; second degree [1] , awarded a second time [1] ; first degree, awarded for the third time [5] . The lower ranks awarded with the sign did not lose it in case of failure to fulfill the conditions established for excellent machine gunners [5] .

Wear Order

The mark was supposed to be worn on the right side of the chest. Each degree of a sign was awarded only once. If a soldier was awarded with signs of two or three degrees, he was obliged to wear all these signs one above the other - a sign of a higher degree over a lower sign [5] . The award was announced by the order in part. A record was made on the track record of the serviceman.
