Soviet period
Born in Moscow . He graduated from Moscow State University . In 1981 he applied for travel to Israel, was refused and was demoted from senior to junior researcher at the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In October 1985, he left for Israel, where he became a professor in the sociology and social anthropology department of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem .
American period
Since 1990 he has been working at the University of Wisconsin-Madison , Emeritus Professor [1] . Specializes in the study of repression in the USSR and the collective memory of them in modern Russia. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1993 [2] .
