Morandi was born in Rome . After graduating from university in 1927, Morandi gained experience in Calabria in working with reinforced concrete. After returning to Rome to open his own company, he continued the technical exploration of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, and also began to develop a number of new structures and bridges.

Morandi was appointed professor of bridge construction at both the University of Florence and the University of Rome .

Projects

  • Ponte Morandi (Toscana) , Italy, 1953.
  • Paul Sauer Bridge, Eastern Cape , South Africa , 1956
  • Ponte Amerigo Vespucci , Florence, Italy, 1957
  • Viaduct Fiumarella, Catanzaro , Italy, 1960
  • Kinnaird Bridge, Castlegar, Canada, 1960
  • Bridge of General Rafael Urdaneta , Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, 1962, partially collapsed in 1964 after a tanker hit [4]
  • Ponte Morandi , part of the Viaduct of Polchever, Genoa , Italy, 1967, four cable-stayed spans, partially collapsed on August 14, 2018 [5]
  • Puente de la Unidad National, Guayas River, Guayaquil, Ecuador, 1970, Beam Bridge
  • Wadi El Kuf Bridge, Libya , 1971, three cable-stayed spans (for seven years, 281 m. The central span was the longest reinforced concrete cable-stayed span in the world) [6]
  • Carpineto Bridge, Potenza, Italy, 1973, three cable-stayed spans
  • Pumareio Bridge, Magdalene River , Barranquilla , Colombia, 1974

He also participated in the construction of the power lines that cross the Strait of Messina .

Cable-stayed bridges differ in Morandi by a small number of supports, most often two in the span and are often made of prestressed reinforced concrete instead of the more familiar steel cables [7] .

In order to pass a safety check, Morandi bridges require significant maintenance and regular repairs. The third flight of the Ponte Morandi crashed in Genoa on August 14, 2018 - 43 dead. The other two main spans remained standing. The cause of the accident remains unknown. In 2016, the Morandi Bridge was described as an “engineering defeat”. This was due to increased maintenance costs. In October 2017, the Wadi El Kuf bridge was closed for safety reasons, when, after inspections, potential cracks in the structure were identified.
