Biography
Born March 20, 1882 in the family of geologist Albert Geim and the doctor Maria Fögtlin .
He studied geology at the Federal Polytechnic School in the city of Zurich , under the guidance of his father.
In 1908-1911 he completed doctoral studies at the University of Zurich and lectured there. He was engaged in stratigraphy and tectonics of Switzerland.
In 1910-1920, he led the search for oil on the islands of Java and Sumatra . One of the first to study the relationship between sedimentation and tectonics and earned an international reputation for his research in petroleum geology.
In 1924-1928 he taught at the Federal Polytechnic School of Zurich, he wanted to become his father's successor in the Department of Geology [3] . However, in 1929-1931 he was appointed professor at the University of San Yat-Sen ( Guangzhou , China). He was a member of the Geological Survey in Canton.
At the end of 1926 he made an expedition by plane to South Africa [4] .
In 1929 he traveled to the USSR.
In 1930, he made an expedition to clarify the height of Gongg Mountain, which was considered higher than Mount Everest .
He carried out accurate chalk stratigraphy in Switzerland based on the study of facies. The game also conducted microtectonic studies, studied the deformation of fossils and sedimentation. In the framework of sedimentology, he compared marine sediments. He received international recognition for his work in the field of oil and gas geology .
In 1937 he was elected vice president of the 17th session of the International Geological Congress in Moscow. He made an expedition to the island of Novaya Zemlya , left historical photographs from the USSR [5] .
He was a member of the Directorate of Geology and Mining of Argentina (1944-1945) and chief geologist of the Iranian Oil Company in Tehran (1950-1952). He made many expeditions, but continued to live in Zurich throughout his life [6] .
He died on May 27, 1965, was buried in the Silfeld cemetery.
