Biography
He studied law at the Brussels Free University . During his studies he became interested in Marxism . He became a member of the left student movement. He became a member of the committee of intellectual anti-fascists, advocated for world peace.
He worked as a lawyer in the Brussels Court of Appeal. Publicist, prose writer and poet.
Prominent member of the Belgian Communist Party . After the occupation of the country by Germany, he collaborated with the underground press, took part in resistance operations under the German occupation.
On June 22, 1941, on the day of German invasion of the USSR , the Gestapo was arrested and imprisoned in Fort Breendonk until September 1941, then transferred to the Neuengamme concentration camp in northwestern Germany. He actively participated in the resistance movement that existed in this concentration camp, was a liaison with the French prisoners who arrived in the camp in 1944. During his imprisonment in Neuengamme, he secretly wrote poems about stolen scraps of paper that he and his comrades memorized.
During the evacuation of the camp at the end of the war, not wanting to leave his French comrades, he died with them on a ship transporting prisoners on May 3, 1945 during the bombing of the British Air Force in Lubech Bay ( Baltic Sea ).
