History
The written sources of 1428 mention Vybovsk, 1558 - Weipso , 1582 - Wybowka , 1588 - Wybowsk , 1601 - Wibowsck , 1627 - Wybofsky , Wiepsa , 1630 - Wäps kylla , 1638 - Wibowsky , Webowsky , 1686 - Wibofska , 1798 - Wöbs manor, ~ 1910 - Webs, 1923 - Võõbsu , Vybovsk [9] .
Ryapin Manor played an important role in the creation of the village of Vyypsu , the owners of which built a tavern in its place around 1601 , which at the same time became the stopping point for ships that went between Tartu and Pskov . Later, a pottery factory and a leather tanning workshop were built in Võõpsu. [7] A motor mill was operating in the village [6] .
The cattle-breeding manor Vyypsu, founded by Ryapin’s estates in 1638 , did not survive, at the beginning of the 18th century it was rebuilt. In 1857 , the village of Vyypsu was founded on the lands of the manor [9] .
At the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century, the village of Vyypsu was an important center of trade and port . In tsarist times, fairs in Vyypsu were known far beyond the region. In 1923, 8,000 passengers were transported through the port of Vyypsu, 700 ships delivered 1,300 tons of goods here and transported 6 times more (mainly wood and bricks ). [6]
These times are described in his novel Life Path ( Elutee , 1938) by Estonian writer [6] .
The village grew until 1920 , after which the roads leading to Pskov and the Warm Lake ( Est. Lämmijärv - Lammijärv) were closed, and the village lost its importance as a port and center of trade.
May 12, 1939 in the village there was a big fire , which destroyed most of the buildings [7] .
Until 1946 there was no bridge in Vyypsu, and communication between the village on the right bank and the village on the left bank of the river was carried out with the help of barges and ferries . In 1946, a wooden bridge was built by German prisoners of war, and shipping from the ports of the village of Vyypsu and the village of Vyypsu ceased. In 1968, a concrete bridge was built. The last passenger ships sailed to Vyypsu in the 1950s . [ten]
The origin of the toponym
Most likely, the toponym Vyypsu in Russian, German and Swedish contains the old Russian name for the Vykhandu river - Vybovka (in the Estonian language it is inclined to be Vyybo ~ Vyyp ) and the word “suu” ( Est. Suu - “mouth”), since the settlement It is located on the first highest place from the mouth of the river [9] .
