Austrian-Slovak relations are bilateral diplomatic relations between Austria and Slovakia . The length of the state border between the countries is 105 km [1] .

History

January 1, 1993, diplomatic relations were established between the countries, after the collapse of Czechoslovakia . Austrian-Slovak relations were characterized by a consistent overcoming of asymmetry in the context of European integration. Currently, Slovakia and Austria are members of the European Union , the Schengen zone and the Eurozone . Austria supported the initiatives of the Government of Slovakia on European integration and provided them with all kinds of support. In 1996, Austria became the largest investor in the Slovak economy [2] .

However, the position of the Austrian authorities forced the Slovak government to decide to stop two units of the Bohunice nuclear power plant located in Yaslovsk Bohunice . Austria is the second largest investor in the Slovak economy, and it also opens banks, insurance companies and enterprises there. Thousands of Slovak students study at Austrian universities. Approximately 40,000 Slovak citizens found work in Austria, often in the health sector [3] .

In 2013, Austria and Slovakia celebrated 20 years since the establishment of official diplomatic relations, emphasizing their good neighborly and friendly character [4] .

Trade

In 2008, the volume of trade between countries amounted to 4.7 billion euros . In 2009, Austria made investments in the economy of Slovakia in the amount of 81.8 million euros, the total volume of Austrian investments since Slovakia gained independence amounted to 3.819 billion euros, which made Austria the second largest foreign investor in Slovakia, accounting for 14.2% of total number of investments. About 1,600 Austrian companies operate in Slovakia [7] .
