Mountain Race World Cup 1987

The 3rd Mountain Race World Cup was held on 22 and 23 August 1987 in Lenzerheide , an alpine resort in Switzerland . 9 sets of awards were played: four in individual and team championships (men at short and long distances, women and juniors up to 20 years old), as well as in the overall standings following the results of three men's races. Among juniors, athletes born in 1968 and younger could perform.

The competition took place on two days in the municipality of Vac in the ski resort of Valbella-Lenzerheide ( Plessur Alps ). The tracks were laid along the western slopes of the local valley. Men at short distances, women and juniors overcame the route with an up-down profile. The long distance race for men had a “up” profile, the finish line was located at around 2,330 meters above sea level.

Competitions were held in sunny and hot weather. 144 runners (88 men, 27 women and 29 juniors) from 17 countries of the world came to the start. Each country could put up to 4 people in each of the races. The strongest in the team championship were determined by the sum of the places of the three best participants. By the sum of team results in men and juniors, winners of the overall standings were identified.

Only at the third World Cup in mountain running were non-European participants able to win medals. They turned out to be Jay Johnson from the USA and Fabiola Rueda from Colombia, who became champions in the main races among men and women. However, in general, the hegemony of Italian runners continued at the tournament: they won all the remaining gold medals, including winning all five team championships.

As in the previous World Cup , representatives of Italy occupied the entire podium at a short distance in men. Fausto Bonzi added the 1987 gold to the 1986 silver medal.

The current champions Alfonso Vallicella (among men in the long run) and Carol Hay (among women) this time were far from fighting for the podium. Englishwoman Haye started the race with the leaders, but could not cope with the heat and finished only in 9th place. Vallicella took 13th place with a gap of almost six minutes behind the first place. In contrast, Helmut Stulpfarrer of Austria extended his series, for the third time in a row he won a silver medal at a long distance [1] .
