Ship Description
One of the nineteen sailing 54-gun battleships of the Peter II type, built from 1724 to 1768 at the shipyards of Arkhangelsk and St. Petersburg . In total, nineteen battleships were built as part of the series [comm. 1] [1] .
The length of the ship according to various sources was 43.57-43.6 meters [comm. 2] , width from 11.6 to 11.7 meters [comm. 3] , and draft from 5.1 to 5.5 meters [comm. 4] . The armament of the vessel was 54 guns, including eighteen-, eight- and four-pound guns, and the crew could reach 440 people [2] [3] [4] .
Service History
The battleship “Asia” was laid down at the Solombala shipyard on February 27 ( March 9 ), 1764 , and after launching on May 13 ( 24 ), 1768 , it became part of the Baltic Fleet of Russia . The construction of the ship was carried out by an ober-sarvaer of colonel rank I.V. Yames [4] [5] [6] [7] .
From July to October 1768 he made the transition from Arkhangelsk to Kronstadt [5] [8] .
He took part in the Russian-Turkish war of 1768-1774. In the campaign of 1769 from June to October he took part in cruising the squadron of ships of the Baltic Fleet in the Baltic Sea , including in August he participated in ensuring the transfer of the first Archipelago squadron to Copenhagen [5] .
The campaign of 1770 became part of the third Archipelago Squadron under the command of Rear Admiral I.N. Arf , consisting of three battleships [comm. 5] , 13 transports and three deck bots . The ships of the squadron left Revel on June 15 (26) and, following the route Copenhagen - English Channel - Gibraltar - Port Magon - Sicily , came to Auzu on December 25, 1770 ( January 5, 1771 ) [comm. 6] . In the campaign of the next 1771, the ship as part of the same squadron moved to the island of Mikono , after which until November he took part in cruising voyages of squadrons and squadrons of ships of the Russian fleet in the Archipelago [comm. 7] , in addition to this, in April participated in the blockade of the Dardanelles , and with1 ( 12 ) on November 5 (16) as a part of the squadron of Admiral G. A. Spiridov - in the bombing of the Turkish fortress of Mitilini and the landing of troops that stormed this fortress [5] [9] [10] .
In the campaign of 1772 from February to August he took part in the blockade of the Dardanelles as part of a detachment under the command of Rear Admiral A.V. Elmanov . In October and November, he was in Kauza on a keeled . On December 5 (16), he again came to the Dardanelles and joined the squadron of Rear Admiral S.K. Greig , who carried out the blockade of the strait [5] .
February 7 ( 18 ), 1773 the ship left the island of Mikono and, heading towards the island of Imbro , went missing. Later, the ship’s mizan mast and several fragments of it were nailed to Mikono Island, none of the 349 crew members on board at that time were found. The entire crew was declared dead during the shipwreck [5] [11] .
