The competition took place in two days in the Valtellina Valley at the foot of the Bernese Alps . Men at short distances, women and juniors overcame the track with an up-down profile. The long distance race in men had a “up” profile.

Competitions were held in warm weather. 152 runners (93 men, 30 women and 29 juniors) from 15 countries of the world went to the start. Each country could put up to 4 people in each of the races. The strongest in the team championship were determined by the sum of the places of the three best participants. By the sum of team results in men and juniors, winners of the overall standings were identified. The hosts of the competition from Italy in all the races were two teams.

The champion among women was Carol Hay from England. She from the start broke away from her rivals and, despite her tucked leg on the final descent, she was able to maintain her advantage.

In the men's event, all the gold medals were left to the representatives of Italy. At a short distance they took the first six places (four runners from the first team and two more from the second). Last year's silver medalist Robin Bergstrand from England claimed the victory among juniors, but the Italian Franco Nitza was able to tear himself away from him at the final lift. Over a long distance, Alfonso Vallicella defended his world title, the second place again, like a year ago, was taken by the Austrian Helmut Stulpfarrer [1] .
