During his tenure, Chernihiv Colonel Yakov Lizogub completed significant church construction. In 1698, he began the construction of a tomb in the Assumption Cathedral of the Yelets Monastery. Here he was buried when he died (August 19, 1698), and the construction was completed by his son Efim . After the consecration, which took place on September 14, 1701, the tomb was named the Church of Jacob. Further, this temple became the tomb of the Lizogubov family. Service was rarely held here. It housed a rich monastery sacristy and a library with the archive of the monastery, until they were destroyed by a fire on January 21, 1869.
The chapel was built very tactfully with respect to the cathedral - its size corresponds to the size of the gallery, previously located near the temple. The height of the structure along with the roof reaches almost half the height of the walls of the temple. Now there are two low drums above the chapel, previously there was a third - above the western part.
