He graduated from the Hoch Conservatory (1887) in the piano class of James Kwast , then for two years he studied under the guidance of Clara Schumann . In 1892 he made his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Gustav Mahler . In 1893-1904 taught at the Hoch Conservatory, then in 1904-1914. at the Cologne Conservatory .

In 1914 he went on tour in the United States, making his debut at Carnegie Hall . In connection with the outbreak of World War I, he stayed in the New World, and after a long tour in 1916, he took the lead in the clavier master class at the Institute of Musical Arts (the future Juilliard School ). Returning to Europe in 1918, he settled in Munich , performed as a soloist and as part of the piano trio (with Karl Flash and Hugo Becker ). At the same time, from 1923 until his retirement in 1946, Friedberg spent most of his time in New York as the head of the piano department of the Juilliard School; after that he continued to give master classes in various American cities. In the USA, he performed a lot in a duet with Fritz Kreisler , for some time he played in the piano trio with Daniil Karpilovsky and Felix Salmond . In 1954, after a fifteen-year hiatus, he again visited Europe; the next year he again went to Munich to give a master class, but caught a cold and died on the way.

In 1953, Friedberg, who did not like recording all his life, released his only studio recording; it included the works of the main authors of his repertoire - the cycle of Robert Schumann's “ Children's Scenes ” and three plays by Johannes Brahms . Thirty years later, this recording was re-released in a significantly expanded composition (among other works recorded two years before the death of Friedberg, but then not useful to the record company, Schumann Symphonic Etudes Op. 13, Tenth Sonata of Ludwig van Beethoven , several of his own Friedberg improvisations) .

Among the students of Friedberg in Germany are Karin Deyes (then his assistant), Edith Weiss-Mann , Erwin Schulhoff , Gerard Hangeveld , Ilse Fromm-Michaels , in the USA - Yasha Zayde , Sergius Kagen , Joseph Banovez , Yalta Menukhin , Malcolm Fredjerzon (and her sister Helen), William Masselos , many others.
