History
1990s
The Faroe Islands national team played the first match back in 1930, but official matches are recognized since 1988, when the Faroe Islands Football Federation was admitted to FIFA (in UEFA since 1990). Despite the fact that the Faroe Islands are not actually an independent state (with broad autonomy within Denmark), the national team is allowed to compete in international competitions. Among the achievements of the Faroe Islands team are two victories in the football tournament of the so-called Island Games in 1989, 1991, where various teams participate, representing the island parts of larger states (for example, Gibraltar , Rhodes , Shetland Islands ).
However, the main triumph of the team is unconditionally considered to be a 1: 0 victory over the Austrian national team in the debut qualifying match for the Faroese of the European Championships. The historic game took place on September 12, 1990 in a neutral field in the Swedish city of Landskrona . The only ball was scored by midfielder of the Suif Sandavavur club, Thorkil Nielsen , wood seller by main occupation.
World Cup 2002
Faroerans may be selected to qualify for the 2002 World Cup. In the opening match against Slovenia national team a few minutes before the final whistle, yielding 0: 2, they equalized. Head coach Allan Simonsen said that the players fought to the end and did not give up. The Faroese took 3 points in a home game against Luxembourg, playing in terrible weather conditions. In the away match against the Russian team, the Faroese lost only with a minimum score of 0: 1, with the Russians getting into the framework of the goal at least 4 times.
2010 World Cup
As part of the selection for the 2010 World Cup, the Faroese became one of the most inconvenient teams - despite the final 6th place in the group and 20 goals conceded, the Faroese defeated the Lithuanian team with a score of 2: 1 and took the points from Austria with a 1: 1 draw. This loss of points cost both teams to continue the struggle for access to the 2010 World Cup. In 6 of 8 losing meetings, the Faroese did not miss more than two goals.
EURO 2012
The performance of the Faroese in the selection for the European Championship in 2012 can be assessed ambiguously: on the one hand, the unpleasant, albeit mundane, defeats from Italy are 0: 5, Slovenia 1: 5 and Serbia 0: 3. On the other hand, the Faroese managed to take away points from Northern Ireland, having drawn 1: 1. Faroerets also remembered the two-game confrontation with Estonia - in Tallinn, the islanders opened the scoring in the 28th minute, but in stoppage time they did not hold up the victory and lost, having missed two goals from Keimar Saag, but in the second match they took revenge with the score 2: 0.
EURO 2016
The team of the Faroe Islands achieved a sensation in the qualifying tournament for the European Championship, beating the Greek team twice: on November 14, 2014 , they won with a score of 1: 0 thanks to a goal by Johan Edmundsson [3] [4] . The result was truly historic: the difference in the FIFA rating between the teams was 169 places, and at the same time the team that was above managed to lose for the first time [5] . In the second leg, the Faroese won on June 13, 2015 with a score of 2: 1 [6] [7] , taking the final 5th place.
World Cup 2018
The World Cup 2018 qualifying tournament was best for the Faroe Islands team: for the first time in its history, the team took fourth place in the group, ahead of Latvia and Andorra and skipping ahead of Portugal, Switzerland and Hungary.

Fans
The Faroe Islands team has strong support, despite the small population. The national team has its own hymns: for example, in 1990, after the famous victory over Austria, Terier Rasmussen ’s song “Hvít sum kavi, blátt sum havi” ( headlamp. White as snow, blue as the sea ) gained popularity, which is actually the anthem of fans and players of the national team. Faroe Islands [8] . The second most popular song is “Reytt og blátt og hvítt” ( Far . Red-Blue-White ), written by Heri Nolsø and Yogvan Olsen [9] .
