Lokul

Locus , locula ( lat. Loculus - a place, coffin, box) - an element of ancient Roman architecture in the form of a small wall niche. Its initial purpose was the placement of caskets and boxes [1] , then until the II century BC they were equipped in the walls of columbaria and chamber tombs for storing funeral urns with the ashes of the dead, which could be located in several tiers [2] .

Subsequently, with the spread of the Christian religion and the change of ritual rituals, locules began to be placed in the upper part of the walls, and their lower part was diverted under the archosolia [3] .
