History
At a time when Pope Pius X approved the norms of the educational and disciplinary system of Italian seminaries in January 1908, also encouraging the creation of regional seminaries, especially for the regions of central and southern Italy , an interregional seminary was organized in Abruzzo , which until that time was the diocesan seminary of the diocese Chieti. On September 21, 1908, the bishops of Abruzzo met in Rome together with the then Apostolic visit of Anselmo Pecci to better determine the solution to the problems of educating and calling young priesthood applicants, as well as the establishment of a canonical unified interregional seminary. On October 2, 1908, the Congregation of Bishops and Regular officially ratified the provisions adopted on September 21. Therefore, we can regard October 2, 1908 as the date of the canonical creation of the Chieti Regional Seminary. This happened at the request of the bishops of the Abruzzo region and after signing a written consent.
The first academic year began on November 1, 1908 and ended on July 15 of the following year. The official inauguration took place on July 17, 1921 . In 1928, Pope Pius XI granted the seminary the privilege of issuing all academic degrees that existed before 1931 , when, according to the provisions of the apostolic constitution of Deus scientiarum Dominus , the seminary was the only institution to receive an academic bachelor's degree . In 1971, according to the new standards issued by the Congregation for Catholic Education , the Pontifical Seminary of the Regions of Abruzzo and Molise was established as part of the seminary from the academic year 1977-1978 to teach candidates for priesthood from the church region of Abruzzo-Molise. Seminary provides its students with the opportunity to obtain a double bachelor 's degree in philosophy and theology . The term of study is 5 years.
