Appearance and First Demos

The Gathering appeared in October 1989 , in the wake of listeners' interest in doom metal style. At the origins of the team were the brothers Hans and Rene Rutten (Hans Rutten, Rene Rutten), as well as vocalist Bart Smits (Bart Smits), who decided to put together a group after one of the gatherings in a local bar. It was in October 1989 . They all lived in the small Dutch city of Oss . Drummer Hans Rutten recalls this:

The composition gradually stabilized. Guitarist Jelmer Wiersma, bass player Hugo Prinsen Geerligs and keyboard player Frank Boeijen joined Hans, Renee and Bart. At the same time, the group got a name that arose after watching the feature film “ Highlander ” together and was accepted by everyone without objection.

According to the musicians themselves, at rehearsals they sang Celtic Frost songs and always ended with the performance of “Dethroned Emperor”. Attempts were also made to play the song “Subdivisons” from the Rush repertoire.

The group rehearsed once a week, every Sunday morning. As a result, by the beginning of 1990, the debut demo “ Imaginary Symphony ” was released, which was recorded live during rehearsals and was the first author's material. In many ways, songs like “Downfall” and “Anthology in Black” were heavy, with a clear bias in death / doom . The lyrics are already very unusual, for example, the lyrics of “Another Day” narrated the death of an astronaut in space. For this demo, the group even received a positive review from Aardschok magazine. January 25, 1991 the team gave the first concert in the club De Meule of the city of Hes . They worked in conjunction with the already well-known groups Deadhead and Invocator . Hans remembers this speech very well:

Six months later, the first real demo was recorded, Moonlight Archer . This film fell into the hands of Rob Trommelen, who then had a small tour organization agency. Thanks to this, the quintet was honored to open concerts of Samael and Morbid Angel on a joint tour of the Netherlands , which brought The Gathering a contract with the indie label Foundation 2000 .

Always ...

For the debut album, several songs were added to the existing demos. The musicians held a series of recording sessions at Caveman Studio , and in June 1992, the disc "Always ..." appeared on the shelves of music stores. It was a classic doom metal with an appropriate style of oppressive atmosphere, a viscous sound. In addition to Bart, the vocalist Marike Groot was also invited, whom she met by chance.

The lyrics remained completely in Bart's power, and he intertwined in it eternal love, the transience of life, dreams and attempts to translate them into reality, the global problems of mankind. The record did not go unnoticed. Local media gave her good marks, and the team was chosen as a support group for the tour of the famous Paradise Lost in their native Netherlands and neighboring Belgium . It was too early to talk about popularity in Europe, but the musicians decided to achieve it at any cost, and the path for this was not the easiest to choose - to experiment. And above all, with the sound of keyboards and vocals, In Sickness And Health used special keyboards, the so-called “space special effects,” played by Hank van Couverden, a school friend of Hans.

The story with the cover of "Always ..." according to Hans was pretty funny:

A no less interesting story came out with the logo; it was painted on the cover of the album “Always ...” with liquid to correct the text. Then there were no computer programs to do something similar, and the font was manually copied from the poster of the movie of the same name by Stephen Spielberg . In September 1992, the Dutch channel VPRO recorded The Gathering for the Nomaden program. They did something like a video clip for the song “King For A Day”. The quality of the material, of course, did not work out very well, but, nevertheless, the group acquired the first video work.

Almost A Dance

This period can be called the most difficult for the group. Following the departure of Bart Smith and Marika Grotto, new vocalists Nils Duffhues and Martine van Lohn were invited. But nevertheless, in spite of great difficulties, the new album was recorded and was called “ Almost A Dance ”. It took him 8 days to record, and another 4 were spent on mixing. The new work was coolly received in the press, and received several negative reviews, especially from Watt magazine. It published a detailed review, and the journalist who wrote it gave us a deuce on a five-point scale. “... Almost a Dance ??? Almost a demo? No. Almost a fiasco ... ”he wrote.

The reason for this failure was, on the one hand, the facilitation of the sound of the group, and on the other hand, the relationship and professionalism of the vocalists. According to Hans Rutten, it was the work with the new vocalists that led the group to a small disaster.

Not the usual attitude to the album was for ordinary listeners either, most of them were generally not accepted as part of the Nils and Martine group. And during a concert in the Paradiso Hall in Amsterdam, The Gathering was booed and showered with beer cans. This situation did not suit all the other participants, and after a while Niels left the group. And then Martina was fired for not appearing at the concert.

Anneke Parish and Mandylion Record

Despite the obvious setbacks, the members of The Gathering were not going to give up. For some time, the group came to their senses after the failure, and at the beginning of 1994 the musicians decided to resume rehearsals, although Hans and Rene were drafted into the army. They could rehearse only on weekends and holidays, which they actively did, and they were equally actively looking for good vocalists.

A lot of candidates were listened. As a result, 21-year-old Anneke van Giersbergen appeared in the group, who lived nearby in the village of Sint-Michilsgestel . She was able to easily and completely organically fit into the group. With her participation, several songs were recorded, two of which - “In Motion part 1” and “Paradise Of The Underground” - fell into the hands of the right people from the large independent company Century Media .

They saw potential in the young group and offered a contract. The musicians understood that there might not be another such chance, and with all the inherent responsibility of the case, began to compose new material. They tried their best, for the album “ Mandylion ”, which was soon released, completely unexpectedly catapulted the group into the major league of European rock music. As a result of painstaking work at Woodhouse Studio with a member of Grip Inc, Waldemar Sorychta, as a co-producer, who has considerable experience in producing, acquired in working on albums by Moonspell , Tiamat , Lacuna Coil and Sentenced , a real masterpiece was born.

“We began to think about how to find our own sound, unlike anyone else,” said Hans Rutten about this work. “But at the same time, we wanted to include in the new album all the best that was at that time from such diverse groups as Dead Can Dance , Slow Dive and Pink Floyd , and most importantly, the vocals simply knocked out the listener.” ^[3] They succeeded fully. Gloomy and thoughtful, inspiring and passionate "Mandylion" was appreciated by the audience. Great vocal parts, ingenious arrangements, unusual samples (including a fragment of the speech of the famous writer Tolkien ( JRR Tolkien ) on BBC radio) ^[3] , heavy riffs - this is what the revived group The Gathering was. The perfection of the texts and melodies came from the desire to correspond to the highest level of Herbert Wells ’s classic novel “Time Machine”, based on which the album was created, and emotional turning out of the soul arose from the loss of Harold, who had long been the group’s best friend. This work was dedicated to him. ^[3]

The result was not long in coming. The single " Strange Machines " climbed into the Dutch top 50 to 37th position, the album also hit the national charts and lasted there for 38 weeks. Finally, the group came to commercial success. In the Netherlands, Mandylion sold very well, and after European tours with new material, fans from other countries of the Old World also began to be inspired by The Gathering. This was also facilitated by the videos on the Strange Machines and Leaves rotated on television channels and radio performances in the programs of the famous radio DJ Hank Westbrook. For 1995 and 1996, hundreds of live concerts were given in Europe alone - both on short weekly tours with Savatage and Lacrimosa , and on more significant months-long tours with Moonspell and Crematory . The band played at all major Dutch festivals, and was also invited in 1996 to major rock festivals such as Dynamo Open Air and PinkPop .

Nighttime Birds

In the summer of 1996, the group begins work on a new album. Due to continuous performances, The Gathering did not manage to write a lot of new songs. According to the musicians themselves, they had to spend a lot of energy and nerves to make a good album. In 1997, “ Nighttime Birds ” appeared - a kind of journey into the world of past lives, unfulfilled fantasies, a flight of dreams and a surge of emotions. The tendency to remove the collective from “metal” roots has strengthened. The new album was recorded in the same studio as the previous one, and with the same producer Siggy Bemm . The disc is again commercially successful. The press and fans are satisfied, there are good reviews everywhere - so there was nothing to complain about. Although there were also disappointed, according to whom the album sounded too soft, and therefore seemed to some quite sluggish. The team began their new concert tour with a performance at the PinkPop festival, continued in Eastern Europe, played many concerts in Poland . In addition, a large European tour took place along with Seigmen and Lacuna Coil - a very successful tour. At concerts there were almost always full houses. However, after the end of the 97th tour, the team suffered serious losses. He was left by guitarist Yelmer Wiersma : he was tired of going on tours and playing the guitar. He was more interested in work in the field of recording technologies.

How To Measure a Planet?

Satisfied with the "metallic" sound, the group was ready for experiments. Attie Bauw, a fairly well-known Dutch producer , was invited to embody a unique sound, who had at his disposal an ultra-modern Bauwhaus studio, literally stuffed with all the latest recording achievements. Despite the fact that Atti's previous clients, such as Scorpions , did not need some sort of very experimental sound trick, he knew everything about this process. Work on the album began in Atti's studio and was conducted in some of Amsterdam’s advanced studios. To give the album a final gloss, the mastering was done in the notorious Abbey Road Studio by Chris Blair himself, working with Radiohead . The result of this long and painstaking work was the fifth disc, The Gathering, released in 1999, “ How To Measure a Planet? "

The new surge in the work of the group was so strong that the songs were enough for a double album, although initially Century Media insisted on the release of two separate independent discs. The total sound of the record is 100 minutes, 28 of which are the title track. The group had not yet reached such a level of drama, however, as well as a similar concentration of hopelessness and gloom. The musicians themselves talk about this album almost as the pinnacle of their work, about what they aspired to for many years.

A large amount of time and the widespread use of computer technology allowed the team to create truly professional material, and this work was deservedly appreciated - the album of the month in Metal Hammer and Zillo , 10 points out of 10 in the Rockhard magazine , 4 of 5 in the magazine “ Kerrang! ". There was a single “ Liberty Bell ” and the video of the same name, which received rotation on major music channels. Metal Hammer magazine recognized Anneke as the best vocalist of the past year. And the number of enthusiastic reviews simply could not be counted!

The disc is significantly different from its predecessors - many fans of The Gathering still have not understood it. There are a lot more elements inherent to groups like Radiohead , Massive Attack or Portishead . They still managed to create their own unique style, which has since been characterized as trip rock .

Немецкие фэны быстрее других европейцев оценили новинку, которая сразу же после появления на свет в июле 2000-го заняла 76-е место в германских чартах. Тем временем контракт группы с Century Media закончился. Продлевать его музыканты не стали, а приняли решение создать для издания своих новых пластинок (и, разумеется, переиздания старых) собственный рекорд-лейбл, который назвали Psychonaut Records.

Уже в 2000 году на новоиспечённом лейбле был переиздан в ремастированном виде «Always…», в следующем — « Almost A Dance ». Ханс Руттен с воодушевлением говорит о переиздании материала группы:

Souvenirs

Альбом « Souvenirs » можно считать вершиной трип-рокового периода группы. Необыкновенный мистический настрой и кристально прозрачный звук, эмоциональный вокал Аннеке и естественность мелодий сделали своё дело, альбом получил положительные отзывы. Грандиозный тур стартовал в марте 2003 года в Барселоне и прошёл по Испании , Нидерландам , Швейцарии , Франции , Италии , Германии , Австрии , Бельгии , Англии и Турции . Посетила группа и Россию , дав 29 мая 2004 года концерт в ДК Горбунова . В том же 2004 году группа осуществила свою давнюю мечту — записала и издала полуакустический концерт « Sleepy Buildings », состоящий из лучших вещей, аранжированных в камерной unplugged -манере. После выпуска этого альбома группу покидает бас-гитарист Хуго Принсен Герлигс , а на его место приходит Марьолейн Койман . Home и уход Аннеке

После удачного « Souvenirs » группа выпускает свой первый ДВД ( In Motion выпустили без согласия The Gathering) — « A Sound Relief » (2005). Двух-дисковый набор включает концерт группы, записанный 23 мая 2005 года в Paradiso, в Амстердаме, плюс бонусы в виде собственных впечатлений группы от турне, заснятых на видео, видеоинтервью и бонусный диск, демонстрирующий коллекцию великолепных трехмерных анимационных клипов.
