Biography

He entered service on October 23, 1791 and was elected lieutenant to the 3rd battalion of the Lower Pyrenees department. March 24, 1792 as a captain of the headquarters he was transferred to the Southern Army. May 15 led a company of rangers in the army of the Eastern Pyrenees. On August 7, 1793, he commanded the outposts of Kurutchamendi near Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, when he received orders to go with a hundred soldiers to the foot of Mount Irklipo to scout the positions of the Spaniards who built the redoubts on top. Arriving at the destination, instead of reconnaissance, he fiercely attacked the enemy’s positions, and after half an hour climbed the mountain under enemy fire, attacked the trenches and was one of the first to jump into a redoubt, where he captured the Spanish commander. The retreating Spaniards rushed to the second trench, but Lanaber pursued and replaced them from new positions, capturing a large amount of provisions.

April 29, 1794 became a senior adjudan. Since 1796 he fought in the West. In 1800, he fought in Italy as part of the 70th line infantry semi-brigade. He distinguished himself when crossing the Ticino and the capture of Turbigo on May 31, 1800, as well as in the battle of Marengo on June 14, 1800. July 19, 1800 was promoted to battalion commander. After that he served in the Brest camp as part of the Belle Island fleet.

August 1, 1806 led the battalion in the regiment of foot rangers of the Imperial Guard . In 1806–07 he fought as part of the Great Army . March 12, 1808 received a promotion, and led the 1st Regiment of Fusiliers, rangers of the Imperial Guard in Spain.

In 1809 he participated in a campaign against Austria. He became famous for his outstanding courage in the battle of Essling, where he received a fracture of his right leg. Since 1810 he fought again in Spain. On July 21, 1811, he was promoted to adjutant general (guard rank equivalent to brigadier general) on foot rangers of the Imperial Guard. Since December 5, 1811, he commanded the 2nd Brigade of the 2nd Division of the Young Guard . Together with the army in 1812 entered the borders of the Russian Empire. In the battle of Borodino on September 7, 1812 he replaced the wounded General Moran as commander of the 1st Infantry Division and led the troops in the attack, but was seriously wounded. He died on September 16 in Mozhaisk from his wounds.
