Walter Deshpal ( Croatian Valter Dešpalj ; born November 5, 1947, Zadar ) is a Croatian cellist . The son of the composer and conductor Shime Deshpalya .

After graduating from music school, he continued his studies at several US conservatories, as a result of which he graduated from the Juilliard school with Leonard Rose , and was also engaged in ensemble music playing in the class of Felix Galimir . Then, for two years, he trained at the Moscow Conservatory under Galina Kozolupova , and also worked under the direction of Pau Casals , Pierre Fournier and Andre Navarre . Since 1972, professor at the Zagreb Academy of Music ; among his students, in particular, Luka Shulich . Since 1992, on the initiative and under the leadership of Deshpal and his sister, violinist Maya Deshpal-Begović, the annual festival of young string musicians “STRINGS ONLY!” Has been held, while in 1996-2000 Deshpal was the musical director of the festival in Dubrovnik.
