History
Kayetur National Park is the oldest in Guyana . It was created by the decision of the British colonial administration in 1929 in order to preserve the natural landscapes, unique flora and fauna. Its original area was 45 square miles .
In the 70s of the 20th century, part of the territory of the national park was given over to the mining industry, which could not but affect the state of the environment, affect the local wildlife and damage the plant world. Therefore, in the 1990s, in order to protect the watershed and the integrity of the region, he was not only returned to the territory, but also significantly expanded: now its area is 224 square miles (approximately 630 km² ).
Description
The mountain range of the park is one of the oldest on Earth, its height ranges from 2,000 to 2,700 meters. The highest mountain of the massif Roraima is also located in the park.
About 20,000 plant species grow in the park, of which about 35% are endemic .
