Hydearion

Haidarion [4] ( Greek Χαϊδάριον [3] ή Χαϊδάρι ) is a city in Greece . Located at an altitude of 98 meters above sea level [1] , on the Athenian Plain , at the eastern foot of Mount Aigaleo , 6 kilometers northwest of the center of Athens . The administrative center of the community of the same name (Dima) in the peripheral unit of Western Athens in the periphery of Attica . The population is 45 642 inhabitants according to the 2011 census [2] . Michalis Selekos ( Μιχάλης Σελέκος ) was elected the community’s Dimarch in the local elections of 2014.

The city is crossed by Atinon Avenue , part of the national road 8 Athens - Corinth , along the southern outskirts of the city passes the Sacred Road ( Hiera-Odos ) leading to Elephis .

History

In Hydearion are the ruins of the temple of Aphrodite referred to by Pausanias [5] .

In 1826, during the Greek Revolution , the Battle of Haidari in which the Greeks under the command of Georgios Karaiskakis and Charles Nicolas Favier opposed the Turkish troops under the command of Kütahi .

The city was created in 1897 ( ΦΕΚ 59Β ) [6] . The population was replenished with refugees from Asia Minor after the Asia Minor catastrophe and the Greco-Turkish population exchange. In Hydearion is the Byzantine monastery of Daphne , the palace of Palataki , the residence of King Otto I and the Botanical Garden named after Julia and Alexandros Diomidosov related to the University of Athens .

Haidari Concentration Camp

The Haidari Concentration Camp was founded by German occupiers during the occupation of the Axis by countries (1941–44) as a place of detention for Greek patriots and resistance fighters. Throughout the entire period of its existence, the camp contained thousands of patriots, many of whom were executed, including for attempting to flee, or as an act of retaliation for sabotage against the occupying forces or for the execution of Germans and collaborators. The Haidari camp was closed in October 1944.

Hydearion Community

The Hydearion community was created in 1935 ( ΦΕΚ 179Α ), in 1947 ( ΦΕΚ 107Α ) a community was created [7] . The community includes Scaramangas . The population is 46,897 inhabitants according to the 2011 census [3] . The area is 22.655 square kilometers [1] . Density - 2070.05 people per square kilometer [3] .
