Giymen, Roger

Roger Guillemin ( Fr. Roger Charles Louis Guillemin ; born January 11, 1924 , Dijon , France ) was a French-American endocrinologist and Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine of 1977 , which he shared with Andrew Schally .

Biography

Roger Guillemin graduated from the University of Burgundy , then received a medical degree at the University of Lyon in 1949. After that, he moved to the University of Montreal , where he worked with Hans Selye at the Institute of Experimental Medicine and Surgery . There he defended his thesis on the Ph.D. in 1953. After defending his thesis, Giymen received a position at the Baylor Medical College ( Houston ), and from 1970 until retirement in 1989, he worked at San Diego .

Rewards and recognition

  • 1974 - International Gairdner Prize , "For outstanding work of the hypothalamic releasing hormones" [2]
  • 1975 - Albert Lasker Prize for basic medical research , "For expanding our knowledge of the interplay between the hypothalamus and the endocrine system" [3]
  • 1976 - National Medal of the United States of America , "Making a Gland of the Gland," thereby making it possible [2] [4 ]

  • 1977 - Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine ,"For the discoveries associated with the secretion of peptide hormones of the brain."

Social activities

In 1992 he signed the “ Warning to Humanity ” [5] .

In 2016, he signed a letter calling for Greenpeace , the United Nations and governments around the world to stop the fight against genetically modified organisms ( GMOs ) [6] [7] [8] .
