Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garcés ( Spanish María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés ; born September 7, 1964 ) is an Ecuadorian political , state and diplomatic figure. PhD , is a geographer, anthropologist and political scientist. Party member Alliance Pais . Member of the World Council of the Future . Minister of Tourism (PRES), Defense (2012–2014) and Foreign Affairs of Ecuador (2017–2018). The current chairman of the UN General Assembly at its 73rd session, which opened in September 2018. In addition to its main political activities, it is also known as a poetess and essayist .

Biography

Born in Spain during her parents' stay there. In the early 1980s she graduated from Lycée La Condamine. She graduated from the graduate school in anthropology and political science at the Latin American Institute of Social Sciences in Quito , as well as in applied linguistics at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador . He has a master's degree in social sciences and Amazonian studies.

In 1996-1997 she studied at the graduate school at Rutgers University in the United States . She also defended her doctoral thesis in the field of environmental geography .

Political career

Under President Rafael Correa , she served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Integration (from January 2007 to December 2007), becoming the first head of the Foreign Ministry with this left head of state. She worked as a special adviser to the President of the Ecuadorian Constituent Assembly (Constitutional Assembly) Alberto Acosta (from December 2007 to February 2008). Then, on March 7, 2008, she was appointed Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the UN .

From October 2009 to November 2012, she worked as coordinator and minister of national heritage and tourism. Minister of Sport in 2011.

In 2012–2014, she served as Minister of National Defense of Ecuador, when Minister Miguel Carvajal resigned to run for elections in the 2013 National Assembly. She became the third woman to head the Ministry of National Defense after Guadalupe Larriva and Lorena Escudero. [3] In October 2014, Espinosa was appointed Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations in Geneva.

From May 2017 to June 2018 - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration of Ecuador under President Lenin Moreno . As foreign minister, Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garcés took steps to resume dialogue with the United Kingdom to resolve the issue around WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange [4] [5] .

At the beginning of 2018, President Moreno was included in the list of candidates for the position of dismissed Vice-President of the Republic, Jorge Glas , but in the end, Maria Alejandra Vicuña, Minister of Housing, was appointed.

In June 2018, Espinosa was elected Chairman of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly [6] [7] . In the entire history of the UN, she will be the fourth woman in this post. During the voting, 128 countries voted for it, and 62 countries voted for the competitor representing Honduras . The last time a woman was chairing the UN General Assembly more than 10 years ago was when Haya Rashid Al Khalifa from Bahrain held this post.

Has published five collections of poetry. In 1990, she won the “First National Prize in Ecuador's Poetry” [8] .
