The name Ebola is a French tracing-paper of the word Legbal from the Ngbandi language , which means "white water". During the Belgian colonial administration, these names were interpreted in French as Eau Blanche and sometimes L'Ébola .
In the area of this river, in September 1976, an acute viral disease was discovered for the first time, later called Ebola fever .
