Dave McClure (born 1966 , West Virginia , USA ) is an American entrepreneur and private venture investor . Founder of the venture fund and startup accelerator 500 Startups , its CEO until mid-2017 [2] [3] .

Biography

Childhood and Youth

Dave was born and raised in West Virginia ( USA ) [4] . He graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in mathematical sciences [5] .

Career

In 1994, Dave founded Aslan Computing. In 1998, he sold the company Servinet / Panurgy. He then worked as a technology consultant at Microsoft , Intel, and other high-tech companies. He was also Marketing Director at PayPal in 2001-2004. In 2005-2006, he served as marketing director at [6] .

After the dismissal from Paypal, Dave became a private startup investor. He has invested in more than 15 online startups, including virtual merchandise and payment monetization platform (acquired by Google in 2010) and the US online learning directory TeachStreet (acquired by Amazon in 2011). In the summer of 2009, Dave served as Facebook Investment Director of fbFund (a joint venture / accelerator venture with large venture capital firms Founders Fund and Accel Partners), which provided seed money for startups using the Facebook Platform and Facebook Connect [7] .

In 2010, Dave founded a venture fund and startup accelerator 500 Startups [8] .

Dave drew attention to his blog 500 Hats (as of 2011 one of the ten most widely read venture finance blogs) [9] as one of the “ business angels ” [10] , participated in a polemic with [11] [12] .

In 2017, an article was published in the New York Times about sexual harassment in the 500 Startups by Dave McClure. It was described there that he sent sexually inappropriate messages to a woman investor who was looking for work in his company [13] . After this publication, he left his post at the company, posting an entry entitled “I'm a Creep. I'm Sorry "( rus. " I'm terrible. Sorry " ) [2] . He later left his post at the company [3] .
