History

In 1938, the Japanese copied Type 23 captured Chinese grenades and launched their production at the Mukden arsenal. In the Japanese army, these grenades were designated as “Type 98” (the numerical code is given by the year in which it was adopted - 2598 (the last two digits) according to the Japanese calendar). Unlike the original German M24 Stielhandgranate and Type 23 , Type 98 was a fragmentation grenade. However, its charge was weak and contained only 50 grams of picric acid (more powerful, but less safe than TNT ). The grenade had an exhaust ring attached to a flammable cord; the fuse delayed from 4 to 5 seconds. Like Type 23, it was a rough copy of the 1924 model, and its efficiency was low. [one]

Design

The body of the grenade was made of cast iron and had a thread in the lower part for attaching a wooden handle.

An explosive charge was placed inside the case and packed in a paper cap. The explosive charge has a recess in which the igniter is inserted.

Through the wooden handle passes through central drilling, in which the fuse is located.

At both ends of the handle, metal threaded bushings are fixed for screwing the safety cap and connecting to the grenade body. A wooden handle was also used, which was attached to the grenade body with screws screwed on the outside of the case.

The detonator capsule is carried separately from the grenade and inserted into the charge socket in the housing. [2]

Two types of grenades Type 98 were produced [3] . differing only in that in one modification the wooden handle was screwed into the case, and in the other it was inserted and fastened with three screws screwed from the outside of the case.

Application

To use the grenade, it was necessary to unscrew the safety cap from the wooden handle, then with a sharp movement, pull the cord of the grater mechanism by the ring and throw the grenade at the target. After the triggering mechanism is activated, the fire beam is transmitted to the powder moderator, which burns for 4 - 5 seconds, after its burning, the detonator capsule is ignited, which leads to the explosion of the grenade itself.
