Salag is a humorous and dismissive nickname for inexperienced young sailors, military men of new sets or cadets of the first years of training in military schools [1] .
Origin
The etymology of the word “salaga” goes back to the name of the island of Alag from the archipelago of the Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea , where during the reign of Peter I the training of the personnel of the Russian naval forces was conducted. According to the surviving information, when young sailors were sent on ships, they were often asked the question: "Where are you from?" The natural answer: “From Alaga” from frequent use began to be perceived as a whole, which led to the emergence of the word “salaga” [2] .
