Design
BEACH-2, like the previous glider of Cheranovsky BEACH-1 , was designed according to the “ flying wing ” scheme. It differed from its predecessor in large sizes and a number of improvements. The lengthening of the wing was increased to 4.16. The Göttingen 436 aerodynamic profile was used with a relative thickness in the region of the longitudinal axis of 11%. The specific wing load was 2.24 kg / m². The glider had only one wheel, enclosed in a fairing . On the wings were placed crutches-props. Along the entire trailing edge of the wing, ailerons were located, also serving as elevators. The vertical plumage consisted of a rudder, but did not have a keel. It was possible to get into the glider only through the hole in front of the wheel. After landing, the hole was closed with a cloth valve.
Flights
The first flight of BEACH-2 took place at the Second Glider Competition in Koktebel on September 20, 1924. The pilot was glider military pilot Boris Kudrin. The glider flew further than all the designs presented. During the flights, an imperfection of the control system was revealed, so the flights were stopped. The steering wheel was obscured by the wing and therefore almost did not work. The pilot had to rotate the device using ailerons. It was further decided to install two rudders at the ends of the wing, which could also be used as air brakes.
At high angles of attack, the BICH-2 turned out to be more stable. The parking angle of 15-18 ° contributed to the rapid separation from the ground.
In total, 27 (according to other sources 28) flights were completed, the longest of which was 1 minute 20 seconds. Thus, BICH-2 was the first in the world to successfully fly a device made according to the “flying wing” scheme.
