Biography
Aulus Gostilius belonged to a noble plebeian family. He made a political career together with his brother Lucius : in 207 BC. e. the Cato brothers were praetors (Aulus ruled Sardinia [1] ) [2] , in 201 BC. e. were among the Decemvirs who dealt with the division between veterans of the new possessions of Rome in Puglia and Samnia [3] [4] . Finally, in 190 BC e. Aulus and Lucius Gostilia were legates in the army of Lucius Cornelius Scipio , who defeated King Antiochus III [5] [6] .
Upon returning to Rome in 187 BC e. the Katon brothers were brought to trial with Scipio on charges of misappropriation paid by Antiochus. Lucius, the jury acquitted, and Aulus was sentenced to a large monetary fine [7] [6] .
