Story

The Eye returns Bisesa to London the day after her disappearance (June 9, 2037), although she is 5 years old on the planet Mir.

On this day, a new large sunspot appears on the Sun , and solar activity causes a powerful solar wind . A geomagnetic storm occurs on Earth, which destroys electrical power and communication systems, as well as the appearance of auroras everywhere.

President of the Eurasian Union Miriam Grec ( Eng. Miriam Grec ) appoints the royal astronomer Siobhan McGorran ( Eng. Siobhan McGorran ) to find out the causes of this phenomenon. Shioben finds a young scientist, Eugene Mangles, a neutrino explorer from the Tsiolkovsky space base on the far side of the moon, who built a model that predicted the storm.

He is assisted by Mikhail Martynov, an astrophysicist from the Sun observation station in Shackleton Crater at the south pole of the Moon. The model assumes an extremely strong solar flare on April 20, 2042, which will destroy all life on Earth.

All earthly governments, except China, are allocating Shioben resources to build the Earth’s protective shield at Lagrange point L1 to deflect the sun's rays from the Earth with a large number of Fresnel lenses .

Bisesa is seeking a meeting with Shioben to tell her about the Firstborn. The first-born are the oldest creatures of our universe, their life originated in the first stars. They value life more, but they believe that in the Universe there is a place for only one civilization, this will reduce energy consumption, and therefore delay the thermal death of the Universe . Shioben believes Bisesa, because she called the correct date of the storm, which will coincide with the date of the solar eclipse, as the Firstborn told her.

Relationship with A. Clark's Other Works

As in Eye of the Times, Baxter and Clark pay their respects to 2001: The Space Odyssey, with lines from a previous book.

  • The first words of Athena, intelligent artificial intelligence in "Solar Storm": " Good morning, Colonel Tuk. This is Athena. I am ready for my first lesson. ” [1] This is similar to the statement made by HAL and addressed to Dr. Chandra during his regression in 2001: Space Odyssey, also implied by the first words of HAL .
  • In addition, shortly before the loss of consciousness is expected, Athena is talking with her space partner, Colonel Bad Tuk. Athena tells Bad: “ I have always had the greatest enthusiasm for the mission ” [2] , repeating the words of the HAL to Dave Bowman about the “ Discovery ”.
  • The character mentions that her daughter works on a team exploring the alleged space elevator. Space elevators play a major role in Clark's early work, Fountains of Paradise .
  • The lunar base called Clavius appears both in 2001 and in the Eye of Time.
