Appearance and structure

These are small animals with a large head, a trunk-like elongated nose, thin limbs, a long tail and hind legs much longer than the front ones. Run fast and jump great. The coat is soft, its color varies from gray to reddish-brown on the back, the ventral side is usually lighter - from whitish to light gray. Within each species, color depends in part on the surrounding soil. In most species, the tail is also much darker from above.

The length of the body without a tail is from 20.2-22.8 cm in small species, such as Elephantulus brachyrhynchus, to 23.9-29.2 cm in large species, such as Elephantulus rupestris . The tail is usually relatively long and reaches 67-130% of the body length. Weight from 35 to 70 g, sexual dimorphism is weakly expressed.

Distribution

They live in northern, eastern and central Africa. They are mainly adapted to arid landscapes and are found in the semi-desert, savannah and bushes.

Behavior

They feed mainly on insects and only to a small extent on vegetation. Monogamous, form pairs for life. Females usually bring one or two cubs.
