History
Guyana and Mexico are two American countries with a completely different history and development paths. In May 1966, Guyana gained independence from Great Britain [1] , diplomatic relations with Mexico were established on March 1, 1973 [2] . Since then, diplomatic relations between Guyana and Mexico have been limited only to interaction in international organizations, including the United Nations and the Caribbean Community [3] . In 2009, Mexico for the first time in history opened an embassy in Guyana [2] , after which the development of diplomatic relations between the countries accelerated. In 2013, countries celebrated 40 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations [4] .
Trade
In 2017, the volume of trade between countries amounted to 57.2 million US dollars . Mexico's exports to Guyana: wheat, fertilizers, beans, alcohol (beer) and steel. Guyana's exports to Mexico: bauxite , rum and crystals . Guyana has several Mexican multinational companies, including Corona and Qualfon [5] [6] .
Diplomatic missions
- Guyana realizes its interests in Mexico through an embassy in Washington ( United States of America ) [7] .
- Mexico maintains an embassy in Georgetown [8] .
