Andrius Gudžius was born in Kaunas, at the age of 19 he became the champion of Lithuania and the world champion among juniors. In 2016, he participated in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In 2017, he became the world champion, and a year later he won a gold medal at the European Championships and was recognized as the athlete of the year of Lithuania (2018).

Biography

Gujus was born in the city of Kaunas in the family of Rimantas and Wajda Gujus. Andryus has a younger brother Mantra and a sister. At the age of one year, the family moved to Padauguva ( Kaunas district ). Married, has two children [1] .

Career

In 2010, Gujus threw a disc at 61.85 m at the country's national championship in athletics in Kaunas , at that time he was only 19 years old. This result turned out to be better than its previous best result by 2.55 meters [2] . In the same year he became the world champion among juniors in Canada in Moncton [3] . He was recognized as the rising star of athletics in Europe [4] .

In 2013 in Tampere, Gujus became the champion of Europe in the age category under 23 years [3] .

In 2016, he participated in his first Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . In qualification, Andrius sent a projectile at 65.18 m, which was his best result of the season. Thanks to this throw, Gujus reached the finals from fourth place [5] . However, in the final, he failed to show even a similar result. His best attempt was the first, in which the Lithuanian threw the disc at 60.66 m. In the second attempt, he threw it at 58.89, and the third was generally unsuccessful. He took the final 12th place in the final, dropping out of the competition after three throws [6] [7] .

At the Diamond League stage in Stockholm, Andrus became the third with a score of 67.29 m [8] . In 2017, he performed at the championship of the planet in London. In the qualification, Gujus became the second with a score of 67.01 m, for getting into the number of finalists he only needed the first attempt - he did not even go to the rest [9] . On August 5, 2017, the Lithuanian became the world champion, throwing the disc 69.21 meters in the final [10] . He showed the best result in his career and went around the second Swede Stol who became just two centimeters [11] [12] . At the same time, the Swede was the leader of the season and the main favorite for the gold medal, throws of 70 meters were expected from him [13] .

In 2018, at the Janusz Kusokinski tournament, Andrius “rewrote” his personal record by launching a projectile at 69.30 m [14] . In June in Stockholm, he again improves his record by throwing the disc at 69.59. At the end of the season, it became known that this was the third longest throw of the past year [15] . He played at the European Championships in Berlin in 2018. In qualification, the Lithuanian managed to show sufficient results for getting into the final only on the third attempt [16] . Nevertheless, in the final, Andrius won a gold medal with a result of 68.46 m. ​​He again turned out to be stronger than the Swede Stol, ahead of him by 23 cm [17] . Andrius made the continental cup in Ostrava , taking third place in the individual event (66.95 m) [18] . For his achievements, Gujus was recognized as the athlete of the year in Lithuania [15] .
