Competitions among men in rowing among men at the 1960 Summer Olympics were held from August 30 to September 3 at Lake Albano , which is located in the Alban Mountains in the Italian region of Lazio , south-east of Rome . The competition was attended by 13 athletes from 13 countries. The current Olympic champion from the USSR, Vyacheslav Ivanov, was able to defend his title and became the second single-rower in history who managed to become a two-time Olympic champion. Previously, only Australian Henry Pears , who won at the Games of 1928 and 1932, was able to do this. At the Games in Rome, the Australian Stuart MacKenzie , who lost 4 years ago in the finals to Ivanov, was also supposed to perform. Mackenzie came to Rome and even spent several training races against Ivanov [1] , but due to his illness he was forced to withdraw from the competitions [2] .
The athlete from the united German team Achim Hill became the winner of the silver medal, and the bronze medal was won by the Pole Theodor Kotserk , who was already the third at the 1952 Games .
At the Games in Rome, the result in rowing was first determined to the nearest hundredth of a second.

Final
From the very start, the lead was taken by the German rower Achim Hill , who overcame the first 500 meters in 1: 46.90. The second with a lag of 0.65 s was New Zealander James Hill . The current Olympic champion from the USSR, Vyacheslav Ivanov , who in the absence of his main rival Stuart MacKenzie was considered the main favorite of the competition [3] , ranked third, behind Achim Hill by 2 seconds. However, by the middle of the distance, Ivanov caught up with his competitors and stepped forward, just a little ahead of the New Zealand rower. On the third place on 1000 meters left the award- winning Pole Theodor Kotserka . 500 meters before the finish Ivanov managed to create a small lead over his rivals. The final segment of the distance Ivanov went very powerfully, increasing the number from 30 to 44 [4] , and completed the distance with a time of 7: 13.96, becoming a two-time Olympic champion [5] . As Ivanov himself later stated: “Mackenzie did not speak in Rome, and I didn’t have other rivals - I won without a fight” [6] . The fight for the rest of the medals went to the finish. Shortly before the end of the race, Achim Hill and Theodore Kotserk passed over James, who was not strong enough for the final part of the race. As a result, the German rower turned out to be the strongest in the fight for silver, and Kotserka won a bronze Olympic medal for the second time in his career.
