An ordinary plant in Eurasia with narrow erect spike-like brushes of small pink or white flowers.

Botanical Description

An annual plant with a lodging or rising stem up to 40-50 cm long, often branched from the base, almost bare, smooth, green or reddish. Leaves on short petioles, linear-lanceolate to linear, 2.5-8 cm long and 3-9 mm wide, glabrous, sometimes with pressed hairs along the edge and veins. The bell is light brown, along the edge with cilia 2-3 mm long.

Flowers are collected in loose narrow spiky brushes , erect, sometimes slightly drooping, pedicels without glands. Perianth 2-2.5 mm long, without glands, pink or purplish red, rarely white. Stamens are usually in the number 5.

The nutlet is 1.5-2 mm long and 1-1.3 mm wide, convex on both sides, rarely almost trihedral, black or black-brown.

Distribution

It occurs in various wet places along the roads, along the banks of streams, on the shallows, along the ditches and outskirts of the marshes. Widespread throughout temperate Eurasia.
